Stand For Education is currently raising funds to support and sponsor schools for children in South Sudan. Children who are fortunate enough to attend school learn in overcrowded, underfunded and poor managed schools. In some cases where there are no schools available to attend, children end up learning under trees with poor under qualified teaching, absenteeism, and a lack of learning tools and materials. With this project we aim to reneovate existing schools, build new schools and provide supplies and materials for students.
What About The Girsl?
South Sudanese girls are less likely to enter school, more likely to drop out, and a young girl in South Sudan is three times more likely to die in pregnancy or childbirth than to reach grade 8. Child marriage is very common in South Sudan with around half of all South-Sudanese girls aged 14 to 19 being married off, many forced into wedlock at as young as 12 years old. These high rates of child marriage have effected these young girls. More than half of South Sudan's population lives below the national poverty line. In these poor families, daughters are often considered a source of income, owing to their “bride price” obtained through the practice of child marriage. In addition, a dire lack of teachers and adequate schooling infrastructure leave girls with few opportunities to pursue education and find qualified employment: only 37% of individuals over the age of 6 have ever been to school and classes count on average 129 students.
Stand For Education will work closely with girls by providing them with adequate education, basic health practice, mentoring and life skills training. One of our main goal is to build "The Adut Malek Girls Boarding School" in Bor Town, Jonglei State. Our school will start off with accepting 100 girls ages 13-18 to live and study in the school. This will be a new home where our students will start the next steps for their new life. However, until we raise enough funds for the building of the school, we will partner with existing schools to sponsor some of the girls we are working with.
By helping to provide girls and women in South Sudan with quality education, proper health services and income-generating opportunities, you enable them to regain control over their lives and futures and to improve their own quality of life as empowered individuals.
